It's Friday, and I'm in my usual spot - on Ryan's side of the bed sitting in front of the computer reading some of the most amazing blogs (please go back and read that last part, but instead of reading it as yourself - read it in Gordom Ramsay's voice and use hand gestures to emphasize: MOST AMAZING) while listening to Slacker. I'm in the process of trying to organize all the stuff I have hosted online, and have been going through a bunch of old pictures and am totally having little flashbacks from a younger time. There is one day imparticular is replaying in my mind over and over, and literally making me laugh out loud. This day will seem completely mundane to you, and I'm sure you will just pass it over as you do a fortune cookies lotto number selection, but to the parties involved, it will surely induce (at the very least) a smile, and maybe even a little sing-a-long :)
The exact year slips my mind, it was somewhere between 1998 & 2000. My best friends boyfriend asked her to prom, and she needed a dress. She was as far from the girly girl as you could get.... well maybe not as far, that was our other best friend - the third member of our little tri-fecta. Dressing up was not her thing, but it was totally mine. I lived for that kind of stuff! Our worlds went from being consumed by the band Korn, to being consumed by the search for her prom dress. The day came for the big dress adventure, and since the mall was directly down the street from our houses - we decided to make it a bus adventure. I wasn't allowed to use public transportation, so I was totally excited, but more freaked out than anything because this was literally my 2nd time getting on a public bus. For some reason (I'm still not sure why) but I thought the bus was $1.26 (or was it $1.36?) and when we went to get on the bus, I freaked out because I thought I didn't have enough money to ride. My friend and her mom quickly reminded me that it was $1.25, and laughed at my complete bewilderment with something so simple as bus fare. We searched through several stores, then there it was. It was perfect, and we all had a little moment. Like I had said before, She wasn't much of a dress wearer. If she wasn't wearing her Grandpas old pants from the 70's, she was wearing scrub bottoms, or much to the dismay of her Dad, oversized jeanes. To see her in a full skirt, full length, form fitted bodice, black lace dress with spaghetti straps, and tiny rosettes was slightly jaw dropping. She was instantly transformed from my friend into some kind of fairy princess. We'd found the dress, and had to start our journey back home. We sat at a bus stop for quite a while waiting for the bus, and to entertain ourselves we sang, not just any song, we sang Tainted Love by Soft Cell. We were quite a musical little group, always singing something, making some kind of sound, or tapping on car parts and clapping to make a little song. We sang so much, we didn't even notice a grumpy old man sitting on the other side of the bus stop. After singing parts of the chorus over and over because we weren't too sure of the rest of the song, the old man had enough and SCREAMED: "SHUT UP!!!!!!" at us. We immediately burst out into laughter. I can't remember if we got on the bus with him, or if we continued to sing on the bus - after pissing an old man off simply by singing, I was blacked out on laughter and teenage insanity. Every time I hear that song, whether it be a cover, or the original - I think about my friend, her mom, that prom dress, and that old man and can't help but laugh. I hope she does too :)
Good memories make my heart smile...I think Flashback Friday's are going to have to be a regular thing!
